[He steps back so Jedao can enter. Not that he was trying to cover the doorway, as he could be shoved away pretty easily if someone wanted, but it's more polite. He likes texting, but it isn't a secure method here.

Jedao doesn't mind. He sits with his back to a wall, near the exit but not blocking it, facing Nico but not in immediate touching range. He doesn't do it by calculation, or purely on thoughtless instinct, either - he feels like an electron in a cloud, very gently moving in response to Nico's position, and the strength of repulsion, a starling in a murmuration making equal space and matching vectors.
Nico generally feels more comfortable when there's at least some calculation involved. It can depend on the result, of course, but it's something he can understand. He's unable not to have calculations running in the back of his head, even when he's aware he's acting from ingrained instinct instead of sense.
"Not yet." He flicks through potential possibilities, narrowing it down to why Jedao might have come to him over it. There are still a couple left but they mostly combine into: "Has someone done something to it?"
"No. And perhaps they'll give up. But perhaps not."
And the next step would be to acquire a key. Nico's would be easier to take by force than Jedao's, if the perpetrator identifies them both as keyholders, although they might not know that, depending on who it is. But even if they don't know what Jedao is capable of, Nico moves like prey.
It's potentially dangerous for someone to break into the engine room. It's his responsibility to try to stop that from happening.
"A second defense? Something more effective than a door." He would like to have that anyway. He gives Jedao a sideways look that might almost be his version of a smile. "If someone tried to attack me, I'd give them the key." He says it wryly, but he thinks it's the most sensible response.
Jedao nods. It is sensible, when Nico can't physically prevent it. On the chance that he lives, or even revives quickly, he then has a chance to sound the alarm.
"Another layer would be a good long term project. In the short term, I was thinking about guards and decoys. Do you normally carry your key with you when you aren't going to the Engine Room?"
"Not the key to the Engine Room." He does keep a key with him, just in case - and to direct where people might look to find it. "I keep it here, otherwise."
His cabin might not be completely secure, but the jammed together bunk beds means the search isn't always easy, especially as the hiding places that they'd created there have been recreated by the Admiral.
"In the engine room?" He already has some set up in his room. Even if it was knocked out so he couldn't see who, he'd still know that someone had tried.
"Or the hallway. Do you think we could get your rig here to talk to my augment if anyone besides you comes in? With your routine obviously going to your cabin right before and after every shift, and I don't, so that whoever it is either tries to take yours here and gets the fake, or comes after me for mine."
Jedao is fairly confident he can handle any would-be thieves, whether by force or stealth.
"But if someone is staking the place out, they might just jump you anyway. How would you feel about Shen Wei walking with you when you have your real key on you?"
"I think the hallway might involve more... debate if people saw it." Nico is used to surveillance, and working to get around it, but he does remember what the Barge is like. There are too many different powers to be certain to set up something no one could sense, and too many people who'd likely object to reasonable precautions.
He also knows what Jedao has to work with, so he can answer that question easily. "Not right now, but I can set something up." He'd probably be able to figure it out even if he didn't know the technology, but as it is, it feels almost more familiar.
"It might alert them to when I have the real key." He's also not sure about the being escorted bit.
"If they go after you when Shen Wei is there, I trust Shen Wei to be able to dispatch almost anyone, or to teleport you away to safety if it's someone with comparable powers. More likely they'd recognize that trap, but hopefully notice that you're more security conscious than I am, and simply come for me instead."
He drums his fingers on his own leg.
"There's also motive to consider. Catching them is one thing, but we also have to maintain the security of the Engine Room even after they're identified, and it's not like we can get rid of anyone."
That's a level of trusting someone else (and someone he doesn't know) with his security that - well, Nico would do it, but he make sure to think through any other option even more thoroughly than usual. He also doesn't want them to go after Jedao, even as he doesn't doubt that he's better prepared to deal with them in general, and not just in comparison to Nico.
"More security inside the Engine Room could help with the more long term problem. Once we do know who it is, then it could even be tailored to specifically warn for them." Though he does think several layers of traps is a perfectly reasonable precaution not matter what. "Inmates can't enter the conference room. We don't have to have something so extreme," or so targeted, "But maybe being stuck in some sort of waiting place... with an alarm that would be immediately set off so they wouldn't be stuck long."
"I think you should play chess with Shen Wei, too," Jedao adds. "That's my ulterior motive. He needs more friends who challenge him intellectually, that he can be quiet and low-affect and protective with."
The same sort of blithe contrast between wheels within wheels and blunt drive that Jedao Garach so often displayed. Shuos, Kel, and the wry acknowledgement weaving between the two.
"I can reach out to Florian to see if the magic behind the Infirmary Waypoint could be sort of...inverted, with a different trigger."
Nico's far more willing to go along with that, at least the first part. He wants to be useful, and, besides, he likes to have someone who can challenge him intellectually too. It's a simple fact that it's rare, and while he's perfectly happy to continue working through things by himself, it's nice to sometimes be able to talk about what he's working on.
He nods. "If it can transport someone to the infirmary, it should be able to transport someone out of the engine room." He decides to not think of the 'transport to the infirmary' thing at the moment. "We'd just need to have a way to get through it that wouldn't go back to having a key or pass-code."
Shen Wei might lose the first game - but his power is learning the abilities of those around him. He'll pick up more, up to Nico's skill level, wonderfully fast.
"I don't know if there's any way to get it to register possession, as well. But we've had - troubles with that, lately."
Kujen, Corvo. It's one of the hardest things to defend against.
"I wouldn't mind an outer layer, too. Anyone touching the doorknob without being authorized, however we authenticate that."
"There are a number of different kinds of possession." Which makes it harder. "Floods, too." Which means that no one can be crossed off the list of potential risks.
He nods. "Perhaps a camera that's set off by someone touching the doorknob?" With stronger defenses inside. He can think of some ways to program in computer recognition that would cut down on some problems, even if it would fix possession or potential issues that might come with a flood.
"Shen Jiye might be able to make something...subtle is maybe the wrong word, but something that could pass for decorative to the casual meddler," Jedao muses.
"What are your thoughts on doorknob induced paralysis without the keys?"
