Character Name: Nico Ramirez
Series: Darkest Minds
Age: 18
From When?: post-In the Afterlife (Book 3)
Warden Justification: Nico might give off the impression of someone about to have a breakdown but even after dealing with death and betrayal from people close to him, he has a lot of qualities that can allow him to help others. To start, he managed to survive that, just as he survived the rest of his pretty hellish life and managed to come out the other side still able to care. He’s empathetic and loyal and good at dealing with manipulation. He also wants to help others, to fix things. When it’s something important, he won’t back down. He knows what it’s like to be afraid and to be hurt by the world and still feel that you can do something to try to change things.
Item: his Chatter (a modified old flip phone)
Abilities/Powers: Nico is a Green, one of the children that developed an uncanny ability to either remember everything or process information and extrapolate from there. Nico is the second type; he processes information very quickly and figures out patterns of behavior and likely choices.
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies: Sometimes, surface impressions offer a pretty good insight into someone’s personality. In Nico’s case, this is half true. The words most frequently used to describe Nico are along the lines of “small”, “delicate”, “scared”, and “fragile”. He’s labeled “a pretty easy target” and he’s served as one all his life. Nico has spent most of his life being an experimental subject due to his powers. He couldn’t do anything and was under the ‘care’ of people who didn’t care that they were performing incredibly brutal experiments on a child. He came out paranoid, withdrawn, bitter and painfully aware that he was the only one of kids who were in the same lab as him died. He also came out wanting to make a better future, even if he couldn’t envision how to get there without help.
Nico’s experience feeds into how he views his role as a warden. He understands what it is to be trapped and powerless. He knows what it’s like to be deeply hurt by the world and to want to hurt it in response. He knows how important it is to have connections with other people. He’ll do his best to engage with his inmate on their terms, and will take their anger or frustration, but he also believes that they don’t have to be trapped by their past and can find a new future. Despite everything, he has a deep faith and others and wants to help. Sometimes he can offer too much faith, and forgives anything done to himself too easily, but that’s part of who he chooses to be.
Nico processes everything very quickly and extrapolates from there, which can be both a strength and a weakness. He can fall into fits of paranoia, which wouldn’t go well with someone already skeptical of the reality of the Barge. He notices patterns in how people act. This allows him to understand people, but also can leave him thrown off if someone starts acting differently. He understands more emotion based actions, but he’s not always able to deal with it due to his own emotional hangups.
He'd likely be good with inmates who find going through stuff from a ‘logical’ experience helpful. He could also do well with inmates who can find use in similar bad experiences or destructive tendencies. He’s good at seeing through manipulation. He’d likely have trouble with inmates who he sees as being pointlessly cruel or who need someone who’s good at being emotionally demonstrative. He’d most likely respond to violent inmates by freezing up.
Nico’s been on the Barge before, so he’ll adjust more easily. He still tends to see adults as automatically dangerous (though that doesn’t mean he sees younger people as automatically safe), but he’s had enough positive experiences that he has control over his automatic reflexes. It’s given him more experience of being free and able to make his own choices. Dealing with so many people, some from very different worlds, is still a lot for him to process, but he’s more used to that. He won’t deal that well with floods that take away control, considering how little of that he’s always had. Breaches are still painful, as they can remind him of lives he could’ve had, but he formed connections with people as they really were on the Barge. He allows himself to want those connections with only a little guilt and tries to maintain them.
