"A lot. Alec put it together over the past three years." He turns it so Nico can dig through the files. There are no identifying marks for who the people are, but there are plenty of statistics on who lived or died, and when, and how. "Did he tell you anything about the transgenics?"

"They're getting sick. It seems random which ones do, but I don't think it is. If we can predict who's going to get sick maybe we can treat it before it kills them."

But there's a lot there, and some of it is incomplete.

"We don't have Manticore's research, which is why this stalled out where it did. But I think with this much to go by there might be a pattern to pick at anyway."

"Yeah, I went through and..." leaning over to find the right folder. "These are all documents related to the people we got out of Seattle, what they did for Manticore and what they do now in Citadel."

"The War Boys. Many of them have cancer," he nods, finding that for him, too, and another. "And the wolf pack there; they were all made from war boys."

"Okay. Tell me if you need more. There probably is more in there."

He studies Nico a moment.

"Thank you for doing this. No one would've blamed you for saying no, including me."

"Yes, but they're my people." For all Nico knows, they could all be like Lark.

Which is why this is not his primary plan: Nico could take the information and do a hundred terrible things with it. But after sitting across from him, Lark doubts that's what will happen.

"Strawberry or lemon?"

People say things like that all the time. They say it in cheerful ways, they say it casual like it doesn't inconvenience them. They say it softly like that will encourage their God to reward them faster for it. They're all taught to say it, and how to say it. And Lark has always been quick with a gracious smile and even quicker to exploit them.

He'd never harmed any of those people. And maybe that's why Nico is doing this: because Lark spent a portion of his time terrorizing and brutalizing him. Submission is as much a tactic as any other.

The chances are high that that's where Nico is coming from: this is appeasement.

He ignores it for now and shakes the mostly empty bag. "Strawberry or lemon candy. Alec never gave you one of these? Here-" He offers three little buttons of sugar, pours the very last one into his own mouth. They're not poisoned. "He'd want you to have some."

"Yeah, he does." Because he'd never been allowed options, let alone the freedom to have preferences. Lark suspects Nico knows how that works perfectly well. "Do you have favorites yet?"

Lark nods slightly; it is dangerous. It's a different kind of danger here on the Barge but part of what had driven him close to mad was knowing that everything about a person could be used to warp them into a new, unrecognizable shape.

It's less dangerous for wardens, but that only really matters to the wardens who weren't already twisted and molded before they got here.

"I won't ask about them, then." Nico could lie, probably would considering who is asking, but there's no reason to put that pressure and uncertainty on him for no reason.

"Would you mind if we meet every couple of weeks to talk about this?" Nodding this time at the laptop.

"Thank you." Lark will ask questions about the math. His truly fatal flaw is not wrath, it's curiosity, and he's smart enough to grasp most things.

He'd been honest when he'd said he needed Nico for this, though. Lark is aware that he could learn all there was to know about math, and Nico would still be on an entirely different level.

This project serves many functions (getting Nico out; seeing if there is anything to that 'amends' theory people spout; most importantly saving Alec's people) but he has an uneasy sense that there is more in it than he's actually planned for. People as submissive as Nico don't exist in Lark's world and he has no idea how to predict what will happen down the line.

It's intimidating. He likes it.

"I won't keep you here. Did you need anything from me before I go?"

He could review in his head to see how many times he's thanked Nico, but why dig around to find embarrassment? Why let on just how much he's reeling from a genuine, quick agreement? If he did that he'd just make himself suspicious of this and this was his idea.

"You, too," he says instead, and he packs his things and leaves.
